Craving a Happy Hour

Oh my goodness, this week has been so busy! I haven’t had time to run at all since I last updated (although I’ll probably go for one last easy run tonight so I can squeeze in some more running time before my race on Saturday) which I’m prety sure has been adding to my stress levels. I’ve gotten so used to getting my endorphins 5 days a week that dropping down to just 1 day since Sunday is just not good for me!

My 20 page paper is finished so now all I have left are some assignments due tonight and tomorrow and then it’ll finally be the weekend! It has been extremely hot and the bars have been calling my name with their happy hour specials and their patrons looking like they’re having so much fun drinking out on the patios. So jealous of their free time!

One night when I was staying up late to work on that research paper my boyfriend offered to make me homemade chicken nuggets :) They were seriously the best chicken nuggets I’ve ever had in my life! Feel free to ignore the cheesy bbq sauce heart..he’s a dork haha.

I promise they looked better in real life…the lighting was terrible!

What’s the best homemade meal you’ve ever had?
- Wow…I don’t even know the answer to my own question! Hmm, maybe buffalo wings I made a couple years ago? And I make the best mashed potatoes and coffee cake (separate, not together, gross!) EVER. Seriously.

Is it unseasonably warm where you live?
- It’s 87 here…the average for this time of year is usually in the 60s! My apartment doesn’t have central air so I’ve been baking all day long!

Frozen coffee drinks? Yes, please!

Over the weekend I went for my long run, actually, my longest run ever. I ran 5 miles without stopping and I felt awesome!! It was such a great feeling of accomplishment and I’m glad I can say that I’ve reached this milestone. This week’s running schedule is pretty mild and I’m just preparing for my upcoming 5k race this Saturday. I’m so excited because I have a really good feeling about my pace and I think I’ll definitely be able to get that sub 30 time!

Today’s run was a 1.5 easy run. I ran it in under 14 minutes, which is the perfect pace for Saturday. Just hope I can hold on to that for twice as long.

My big treat of the day: a tall mocha frappuccino. SO good on this super hot day.

Short post because I’m in the midst of writing a 20 page paper that’s due Wednesday :( I’ll be back to normal after the race this weekend!

What’s your most recent running/fitness milestone?

Any big plans this weekend?

- Other than my race, I’ll be celebrating my 22nd birthday with my friends and also picking the winner of the giveaway!!

Mugs as big as your head!

Last night’s run was AMAZING. I managed to get it in before it got dark outside so I didn’t have to go to the gym and run on the treadmill. This run was my fastest paced run EVER, including my previous 1 milers! I ran 2.52 miles in 23 minutes for a pace of 9:07!!!! I felt so good, albeit out of breath, the whole time! I didn’t have a goal pace and instead just let my feet do what they wanted. Best. Run. Ever.

Today consisted of eating a lot of junk food and laying around pretty much all day long. Not the most productive of days, but I didn’t hate it :) It’s a rest day as far as training goes, but tomorrow’s run is my longest yet — 5 miles! Fingers crossed I can get through it. Tonight’s agenda: finishing up some homework that’s due at midnight and starting on my huge research paper that’s due next week that I probably should have started working on 3 weeks ago. Yikes!

Hello to all of my new readers that got referred to my giveaway by Janae @ HungryRunnerGirl.com (aka my favorite blogger of all time)!! I’m so thankful that she linked to my giveaway post on her blog. Speaking of that post…I need to keep reading that book! Maybe I’ll do a review post once I’m done and share some of my favorite things from the book with you guys.

Oops, almost posted without any photos! Here’s a picture of me from last night, note the wet hair and the beer mug as big as my head.

What’s your favorite beer ever?

- I like Summer Shandy at the beginning of the warmer months, but last night I opted for Blue Moon

Who’s your favorite running blogger (other than me of course!)?

Sweaty All Nighters

Yesterday’s workout was a surge run…basically that means interval training according to my training plan! Usually, surge runs are my least favorite workouts. Last night, they were AMAZING. I just felt so good the whole time!

1 minute surges (fast pace run) with 2 minute recovery jogs times 12 for a total of 34 minutes.

I ran it on the treadmill because I’ve found that I push myself a lot harder on surge runs when I have the fast/recovery paces forced on me. Every few intervals I upped the pace to really challenge myself. The last two surges got up to an 8:00 pace :) which is the fastest I’ve ever gone on a treadmill. I ended up running for 3.51 miles at a 9:41 pace.

I finished my night up at the gym with some spinning for about 40 minutes. Went 10.26 miles and got super duper sweaty…seriously, my shirt was drenched and there was sweat pouring into my eyes. I think I might need to invest in one of those wicking headbands soon!

Once I got back home I “studied” for my midterm in Community Nutrition that I have tomorrow. And by study I mean I drank a lot of RedBull, ate a bunch of white cheddar popcorn, and read through all of the powerpoint slides from lecture. Hopefully it’s enough! I still haven’t showered…maybe I should do that before my exam. Or maybe not. Yeah, I’m gross like that.

What was/is your study fuel of choice?

- Sugar free RedBull and some sort of crunchy snack

What sort of workout did you do last night?

Salad Success!

I made a huge salad for lunch yesterday with the help of my pre-made homemade salad bar. It was super yummy and I’m definitely going to keep doing prep work for salads so I can get more veggies into my daily diet! I finally tried a grape tomato and ummm GROSS. The flavor was just not my thing…at least now I know I truly don’t like them! So those will be donated to my boyfriend so they don’t go to waste :)

After I gave my lunch time to settle, I headed out for an easy 3 mile run. Maybe a big fibrous salad wasn’t my best pre workout meal choice… I had stomach cramps for the first mile or so but then I finally started to feel better for the last two. My goal pace was 10:00 and I finished in a little under 30 minutes, so I was fine with that!

I thought it was going to be a lot windier out than it really was, and wore a long sleeve shirt. Completely unnecessary. By the end of my run, my shirt was the same color of my face.

And drenched in sweat, as it should be. ;)

What is your least favorite food or ingredient?

- Ricotta cheese is gross.

Have you entered the GIVEAWAY??

- If you haven’t you should probably go check it out HERE

Marathoning Giveaway!

I had an overwhelming urge to go to the bookstore today and pick up a running book or two for some night time reading, so that’s exactly what I did! I picked up two books:

  • Marathoning for Mortals [John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield]
  • Complete Book of Women’s Running [Dagny Barrios]

Training Schedule Tuesday!

I’m cheesy and I like alliteration posts so I decided to start one of my own (I’m sure someone else has probably already done this one before, but it’s new to me so I’m claiming it as my own!!): Training Schedule Tuesday! If you want to join in, feel free :) Make sure to let me know in the comments if you make a post.

Here is my training schedule for the week:

Tuesday: 3 mile run

Wednesday: 40 minute run with a negative split goal

Thursday: 2.5 mile run

Friday: Rest or Crosstrain (maybe p90x arms??)

Saturday: 5 MILE RUN!!! — a new milestone, if I complete it!

Sunday: Rest

Monday: 1.5 mile run (less mileage next week because I have a 5k on Saturday, May 5th!)

Have you ever done p90x?

- I have, but only for like 5 days before I quit! Now, I just like to do random workouts to supplement my running :)

Tell me your training schedule for the week! And also, what are you currently training for?

I should spend more time on my hair

I headed to the gym tonight with the intention of completing my surge run on the treadmill. I even tried to use the treadmill with the on demand episodes of Friends (awesome!) in order to keep my attention off of how much I hate surge runs so that the time would go by faster. Instead, ten minutes later, and only a mile into my run, I quit. I felt dehydrated and tired…so I headed over to the stationary bike and rode for 45 minutes (11.3 miles). I left dripping in sweat — a sign of a successful trip to the gym! — and not the least bit disappointed in my failed run. I’ll just try that run again tomorrow :)

So, I like making lists. I also enjoy making these lists on post-it notes and then losing them :) So this week, I decided to make my post it note on my blog. This way, I know I won’t lose it and also I’m sure everyone out there is just sooo interested in what I have to do this week.

1. Brush my hair

This might sound silly, but I haven’t brushed my hair in over 2 weeks… I have naturally wavy hair and if I brush it, it gets all frizzy. The downside to this, is that if I don’t brush it, it gets matted from my crazy sleeping aka tossing and turning all night and forms a gigantic tangled knot. I’m estimating that brushing my hair tonight/tomorrow is going to take almost an hour. Not joking.

2. Dye my hair

Last winter/early spring I dyed my hair brown to fulfill a life long dream of being a brunette. It wasn’t that bad looking on me, but I just felt like my natural blonde hair looked better. You be the judge:

Ever since dying it back to blonde, I’ve been stuck in a vicious cycle of dying my hair different shades of blonde trying to find one that finally lets my natural hair grow back in without looking like I have 3 inches of dark roots! So yeah, I need to dye my hair because it’s been way too long since the last time I did that.

Wow, I really sound like I love to keep up with my appearance, huh!

3. Take my clothes to Plato’s and then take whatever they don’t buy to Goodwill.

I finally went through my clothes last week and picked out all the shirts/pants/t-shirts that I hate and haven’t worn in over a year. It was a long overdue chore that I finally tackled. Now, the clothes are in neatly folded piles but they’re taking up space! Plus, the Plato’s close could bring in some much needed money for this broke college student, which would be nice :)

4. Go through my millions of drawers and THROW THINGS AWAY.

I’m a pack rat. This trait, combined with being very unorganized, has resulted in a extremely cluttered and messy room. I’m reaching my breaking point. I need to just throw things away!! My goal is to have half as many things when I move out of this apartment, as I did when I moved in.

5. Study for my midterm on Thursday.

I don’t think I really need to explain this one…

What’s on your to do list this week?

Do you have a hard time parting with your clothes? Even clothes you haven’t worn in years and/or don’t even really like?

Have you ever taken your stuff to Plato’s closet? How much did you get?

Sometimes they barely pay me anything for my clothes, but a couple of times I came away with over $100…no idea why they love my stuff sometimes and hate it other times. Hopefully they LOVE it this week :)

I feel like a REAL runner!

This weekend was amazing, mostly just because I finally got to relax and not think about school for 48 hours. Last week I had so many projects, papers, quizzes, and midterms that it was tough to get a moment to myself! But this week is a lot less busy so I enjoyed most of my weekend on the couch.

I went for my “long” run of 4 miles on Saturday (I can hear seasoned runners giggling now…4 miles is long??) and it went well. It was really cold, rainy, and windy but I decided to skip the treadmill and run outside anyway. Honestly, I feel like I wasn’t a real runner until Saturday because normally I avoid less than perfect weather at all costs and run inside. But on Saturday I faced it head on! I think I’ve earned my running stripes for real now :) I headed down towards campus because I wanted to run on the Oval (our version of a quad). Only problem was, there was a bajillion people on High St. and all around campus walking to the spring football game. I spent about a half mile dodging people on the sidewalks of campus before deciding to head back to the off campus housing area of Columbus. I got a side stitch a couple of times, which I don’t really ever get these days, but I think this was due to a lack of hydration rather than poor breathing.

I only had about 2 tenths of a mile left before I could finally stop running when a guy started trying to flag me down…I had my head phones in so I tried to ignore him but he practically ran me down with his car to get me to stop. His question: How do you get to the football stadium?

This question is soooo ridiculous because it’s Ohio State. Our campus basically revolves around football season and to not be able to find our gigantic stadium is just incomprehensible. Gasping for air, I tried to point him in the right direction but I could barely think, nonetheless act as a TomTom. I doubt I helped the guy out at all, but it’s his fault for stopping a very tired runner when she’s almost finished with her run!

My goal pace was 11:00 and I ended up beating that and running the 4 miles in about 42:30, at a 10:38 pace! I’m beyond thrilled with that time and I’m proud of myself. Feels like another milestone has been met :) This weekend’s long run is 5 miles. I think I’ll head down to the river trail to make the run a little more enjoyable, and I hope this time it’s not raining!

After my run I got ready and headed to Red Robin with the boyfriend for my guilt free meal of the week. I had the BEST burger I’ve ever had in my entire life. If you go to RR anytime in the near future, check out the bleu ribbon burger! Onion straws, chipotle mayo, and bleu cheese? TO DIE FOR. My mouth is practically watering just thinking about it!

Image

Obviously I took that picture of the burger myself and I didn’t just steal it from the RR website because I forgot to take a picture of my sandwich when I was at the restaurant…

What’s your favorite restaurant burger/sandwich?

What’s the longest distance you’ve ever run without walking? How long did it take you?

Homemade Salad Bars

I stayed up really late last night to study for my kinesiology exam this morning…it paid off because I got above the class average, which always makes me feel good! However, I didn’t have time/energy to make breakfast this morning and ended up eating McDonalds (gross). I had one sausage burrito and a hashbrown and honestly expected to be starving within a couple hours, which is how I normally feel after eating fast/junk food. Instead, I wasn’t hungry until about 45 minutes ago! I guess if I ever have to eat fast food for breakfast again I’ll keep this option in mind.

After a quick nap I headed off to the grocery store to get supplies for making my very own salad bar. I did all of the prep work this evening so that I can start eating salads tomorrow. I got all of my favorite toppings, plus one I’ve never tried before: red onion, broccoli, green bell pepper, banana peppers, hard boiled eggs [not pictured], shredded carrots, mushrooms, and grape tomatoes (I’ve never had one before! I know, I’m weird). I’m probably way too excited about making a salad tomorrow for lunch, but I just can’t help it!

Image

No running today, since it’s my rest day before my long run tomorrow (4 miles, never done 4 miles straight before!). I feel kinda weird not exercising though, so I might do a bit of weightlifting or cross training at the gym tonight, just to burn off some extra energy!

What are your favorite salad toppings?

Do you cross train on your rest days or take a complete day off from working out?

- I just play it by ear. Some days I don’t do a single ounce of physical activity (other than walking to the kitchen lol). If I want to work out on a rest day, then I just hit up the elliptical or stationary bike to burn off some energy!
